Oncology Essentials, Luxembourg, 6 - 8 August 2012 held

Course Master: Dr. Jarno Schmidt MRCVS, DECVIM-CA, Dr. Martin Kessler (DE)

OVERVIEW

Cancer Chemotherapy

Diagnostic and medical management of cancer patients

This seminar focuses on medical oncology and is designed primarily for small animal general practitioners, medics (e.g. CertSAM), and residents interested in cancer chemotherapy. Over the past decade, our knowledge of cancer in animals has increased rapidly. More and more veterinarians and clients are becoming open-minded about treating canine and feline cancer patients with chemotherapy.
This seminar will start with the diagnostic approach to the cancer patient, including basic cytology, biopsy taking, staging procedures and diagnostic imaging. Then the most important canine and feline tumours treated with antineoplastic drugs or novel treatment strategies (tyrosine kinase inhibitors) will be dealt with. Management of side effects will be explained and safe handling of chemotherapeutic drugs will be practiced hands-on. A major emphasis of the course will be on interactive and case oriented work using a systematic approach to the cancer patient including recognizing symptoms, interpreting radiographic findings, choosing correct staging procedures and formulating a therapeutic plan.

TOPICS

  • Tumour staging methods (incl. CT, ultrasound, Xrays, cytology, biopsy methods)
  • Understanding indications, limitations and risks involved with chemotherapy
  • How to safely administer chemotherapy: this part includes a hands-on session introducing a safe and affordable system for administration of cytotoxic agents (PhaSeal®-system)
  • Using Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors: Palladia® and Masivet® are the first drugs approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) for small animal tumours (canine mast cell tumours)
  • Interactive case management sessions: neoplasms treated mainly with chemotherapy (e.g. lymphoma, leukaemias, malignant histiocytosis, etc)
  • Basic cytology
