OVERVIEW
This 2012 neurology course is designed for veterinarians who have already attended the first course and feel comfortable with neurolocalization or wish to broaden their knowledge and level of competency in Neurology. This intensive training is mainly structured on problem solving teaching and case based oriented learning. The morning sessions will include lectures/presentations on various topics such as intracranial inflammatory and neoplastic diseases, seizures and EEG, management of a trauma patient, degenerative and vascular diseases, diseases of the spinal cord and therapeutic options (conservative or surgical), as well as diagnostic approaches like MRI, electrodiagnostics, and biopsies. The afternoon sessions will focus on problem based solving of neurological diseases performed in small groups. At the end of this course, the attending veterinarians will be able to possess the level of competency necessary to solve most of the problems in daily practice.
TOPICS
Problem oriented approach (POA) in working up neurological cases: additional diagnostic tools.
• Principles of the neurological examination and localization including
-Blood work-up: Theory and practical applications
-CSF analysis: Theory and practical applications
-case presentations and video sessions in the afternoon in small groups.
• Myelography , CT and MRI: Theory and practical applications
case presentations and video sessions in the afternoon in small groups.
• Electro-diagnostics: EMG; MNCV; SNCV; BAERs and EEG: Theory and practical applications
Brain biopsy and CNS cytology/histology, muscle and nerve biopsy: Theory and practical applications
• Practical work-up of neurological cases: POA: Seizures: clinical work-up
Case presentations and video sessions in the afternoon in small groups
• Practical work-up of neurological cases: POA: Head-tilt: clinical work-up
case presentations and video sessions in the afternoon in small groups.
The goal of the afternoon session is to find the correct neurolocalization of video cases or (if possible) current clinical cases,to list differential diagnoses, and to make a reasonable plan for diagnostic workup. At the end of the day all findings will be shown and the final diagnosis will be given.
