Neuropathology - Intensive Course for Pathologists, Neurologists and MRT Users, Berne / Switzerland, 26 - 30 October 2009 held
Course Master: Prof. Dr. Marc Vandevelde DECVN (CH)
Co-lecturers: Prof. Dr. Robert Higgins DACVP (USA), Dr. Anna Oevermann DECVP (CH), Dr. Daniela Gorgas (CH)
OVERVIEW
The ESAVS neuropathology course has been offered many times. Over the years, the public has been changing with ever more clinical neurologists attending the course. Clearly, diagnostic imaging, particularly MRI has become a major aid in clinical diagnosis and correct interpretation of MRI findings necessitates good knowledge of neuroanatomy and neuropathology.
Gradually we have adapted the course to the new needs and in this newest version we are emphasizing the correlation between MRI and pathology to a much larger extent than before.
Certainly this remains primarily a neuropathology course. We will not train you to do MRI`s. We will teach you the basic lesion types and reaction patterns in the CNS and the key morphological features of the most important CNS diseases. However we will start from the MRI image and take you from there to the macroscopic and histological aspects of the lesion. We will put a lot of emphasis on neuroanatomy and macroscopic neuropathology. We will also teach you the strategy and principles of performing a competent neuropathological examination and a practical approach to solve neuropathological problems.
This is a very intensive course but our experience over the years and feed back from former participants have shown that our approach is very effective and lays a solid foundation for further individual development in neuropathology.
For whom is this course of interest?
Clinical neurologists: The course meets the neuropathology requirements of the ECVN. Because of the rapidly increasing importance of MRI also in private practice, neurologists can greatly profit from this course.
Diagnostic imaging experts: A more profound understanding of neuropathology is undoubtedly an advantage for those who are regularly performing MRI studies of neurological patients.
Pathologists: This course offers a comprehensive and effective introduction to diagnostic neuropathology for diagnostic pathologists and pathology residents. The link to diagnostic imaging and clinical neurology offers insight into the needs of neurologists and radiologists to get adequate pathological feed back.
TOPICS
Practical gross neuroanatomy in MRI and brain sections
Braincutting / representative sampling, processing.
Macroscopic examination: detecting gross lesions.
Basic reactions of the CNS to damage at the histological level.
Principles of classification
Specific categories of lesions:
Malformations
Inflammatory lesions:
- Recognizing different patterns
- Infectious diseases
- Non-infectious inflammatory diseases
Tumors of the nervous system:
- Recognizing major types
- Gliomas
- Meningeal tumors
- Metastatic tumors
- PNS tumors
Trauma of the CNS:
- Brain trauma
- Spinal cord trauma
- Spinal cord compression
- Infarcts of brain and spinal cord
- Toxic-metabolic diseases.
- Degenerative diseases
General approach:
The different topics are introduced in interactive introductory lectures. Typical MRI images of various lesions are presented with corresponding gross and microscopic pathological findings. For each topic practicals are conducted with individual reading and interpretation of images of gross lesions and reading histological sections with the microscope. The findings are presented at a plenary session and discussed.
