Equine Dentistry Basic Course, Hannover / Germany, 31 August - 4 September 2009 held

Course Master: Dr. Peter Fahrenkrug DEVDC (DE)
Co-lecturers: Dr. Peter Stelzer

OVERVIEW

Equine Dentistry Basic Course with Workshop

During the five days of this equine course veterinarians will be taught to diagnose and treat dental problems in horses.
Starting with an update in equine oral anatomy, participants will receive information regarding: developmental, traumatic and age-related malocclusions and defects including equine oral X-ray techniques and common pathological findings. A majority of the full range of instruments will be available for hands-on use.
Standard techniques including: sedation, nerve blocks and examination procedures will be extensively practised on wet specimens in the pathology department, followed by a full day of practical hands-on treatment on numerous live horses at the famous Hannoveranian National Stud Farm.
The participants will be split into groups, each group will make a diagnosis and treatment plan for a single horse. Afterwards they will check their results with the lecturers and if correct, conduct the treatment or they will have to re-access their findings and diagnosed treatment prior to treating the animal.
Each case will be documented with digital photographs and will be discussed with the whole group, so that each participant is made aware of each case. If there are rare or unusual findings in a case, all participants will work together to come to a conclusion.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments and will be trained to optimize the use of them and recognize any defects.
On the last course-day there will be a discussion of all the findings from the treatment sessions and develop a structured plan for a rational and systematic approach to standard equine dentistry.
The group will benefit from the expertise of the course masters and lectures.
