OVERVIEW

REPRODUCTION IN COMPANION ANIMALS

Under the scientific responsibility of the European Veterinary Society for Small Animal Reproduction (EVSSAR) a new training program entitled Reproduction in companion is offered. This course is designed for veterinarians wishing to broaden their knowledge and level of competency in this continuously developing field of veterinary medicine. This intensive training will include fundamental as well as the most recent clinical advancements and will be mainly structured on problem solving teaching and case based oriented learning. At the end of this course, the attending veterinarians will be able to possess the level of competency necessary to solve most of the problems in daily practice and kennel management.

This education may serve and be included in the alternative pathway to become recognised as a specialist in small animal reproduction.

The complete training program will consist of two consecutive courses of 5 days each held at one year intervals:
2015 : I - Physiology and pathology in female, and artificial insemination.
2016 : II - Physiology and pathology of male, neonatalogy, cats small mammals and exotics
During the courses lectures, demonstrations, case presentations and laboratory studies will be organised. The course language is English.



TOPICS

Day 1:
Breeding management and control of reproduction. Introduction. Case report: Management of the heat to obtain a pregnancy in the bitch. Case report: Interests and limits of hormonal assay in breading management. Case report: Medical prevention of oestrus. Practice: Carrying out and interpretation of vaginal smear and hormonal assay.

Day 2:
Mating, assisted mating, and artificial insemination. Case report: How to manage the natural mating and the unsuccessful natural mating. Case report: Semen collection and preservation. Case report: Legal and zootechnical aspects concerning semen banking and international exchanges. Practice: Collection and examination of semen. Preparation of fresh, chilled or frozen semen for insemination. Practice: Insemination training.

Day 3:
Infertility of the bitch. Case report: How to investigate ovarian and uterine function. Case report: Infertility in the bitch - work up and treatment.. Case report: When and how induce the oestrus of the bitch. Practice: Insemination training- vaginal, cervical and laparoscopic.

Day 4:
The pregnant bitch. Case report: Pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring. Case report: Parturition monitoring and prediction of parturition term. Case report: How to manage dystocia and obstetrical emergencies. Case report: Management of unwanted mating in a bitch. Practice: reasoning about induction and scheduling of parturition in the bitch. Practice: Reasoning about Anaesthetic protocols for C-section.

Day 5:
Management of external genitalia, vagina and uterus pathologies of the non pregnant bitch.
Case report: How to manage vulvae discharges. Case report: How to treat vaginal abnormalities. Case report: Surgical and medical treatment of mammary gland tumors. Case report: Anaesthesia and pain control in reproductive surgery. Practice: Ultrasonography of the pregnant and non pregnant bitch. Practice: Pregnancy diagnosis by relaxine assay.
